March comes to us with a slow but sure promise of Spring....some days in March still feel like deep winter...other days tease us with warm breezes and temperatures soaring into the 60's.
On March 20, for the first time this year, there are equal hours of dark and light. I believe that March tries to teach us the value of balance. Of not rushing into Spring, nor running away from Winter. Of taking each day as it comes, being patient with the changing season, and most of all, making peace with yourself .
Some mornings in March, I jump out of bed ready to tackle the world and seize the day. I wash the windows as the sun pours through them, I rake the last remnants of the autumn leaves out of the flower beds, I cook an amazing , healthy meal for dinner, and I fall exhausted into bed. The next day, all of that energy has disappeared. The temperature has fallen from 55 back to 30, taking my enthusiasm with it. I spend this morning padding around the house in my pajamas, leaving the fire place on, and drinking cup after cup of hot tea. This day, I feel accomplished when I brush my teeth . And that is okay .
I am letting nature teach me. I am listening as the universe whispers that sunshine and warm winds will be back, but until they arrive, it is okay to rest. It is okay to relax, and be cozy. It is not only okay, it is an invitation to find joy ! If you're going to stay in your pajamas all day, make them your favorite pajamas ( I love to order off season, so I am rocking out brand new Victoria's Secret rainbow candy cane PJ's from the clearance tab). If you're going to drink your weight in hot tea, then by golly indulge in a new brand or type of tea .
Embrace balance, practice balance, and strive for balance. March provides a perfect time to ask yourself "In which area of my life do I want or need more balance?" At Tranquil Lake this month, we begin each class in centering, in breath, and in asking that exact question. If you would like to try this at home, find a quiet corner , get comfortable, close your eyes, and slow down your breathing. Maybe inhale for 2 counts, hold for 2 counts, then exhale for 2 counts...repeat until you feel calm and relaxed. Then ask your self , "In which area of my life do I want or need more balance?" When you are satisfied with the answer, bring a mental image of what that balance would look like in your life. Imagine how that balance would feel in your body....create a mantra or affirmation, and repeat it daily. The mantra could be "I will create more time with my family by leaving my phone on the charger from 7 to 9 pm each night. By doing this, I creating balance between my work and my family life".
To take your balance practice even further, join us in the studio at Tranquil Lake during the month of March, where all of our teachers have integrated balance into their classes.
We would be honored to provide you with the tools you need to create a physically, emotionally, and spiritually balanced life.
We thank you for your time, and we wish you all the joy in life,
Megan Lake-Smith, Tranquil Lake Yoga & Wellness
